Protected Characteristics
The Equality Act 2010 provides a legal framework to protect individuals from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. The Act applies to everyone in Britain and identifies nine protected characteristics on the basis of which individuals are protected from discrimination.
The nine protected characteristics are:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Race (including colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin)
- Religion or belief
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
- Pregnancy and maternity
At St Patricks Catholic School, we are committed to promoting equality, dignity and respect for all members of our school community. We encourage our pupils to value and respect the uniqueness and dignity of every individual, recognising that all people are created in the image of God.
Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure that pupils develop age-appropriate knowledge, understanding and respect for equality and diversity throughout their time at St Patricks Catholic School, in accordance with the teachings and values of the Catholic Church.
Our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) programme, Ten:Ten, supports this work by exploring themes relating to equality, respect, relationships, difference and inclusion at an age-appropriate level. Through our curriculum and wider school life, we seek to equip pupils with the knowledge, understanding and values they need to treat others with compassion, dignity and respect.
